Marriott opens luxury lodge at Maasai Mara

Marriott International has opened its first luxury safari lodge in Africa, deep in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge has 20 luxurious and spacious ensuite tents, each with a private deck overlooking the famed banks of the Talek River. Guests at the lodge will have access to a dining room, lounge bar, spa, gym, photographic studio, garden and a large outdoor viewing deck with a fire pit. A night at the Mara Lodge costs at least $1,715 (Ksh 222,950), putting it in the same league as the exclusive Mahali Mzuri, where rates start at $1,485 (Ksh 193,090) per night.

The Mara Lodge is the US hotel chain’s fourth property in Kenya, marking entry into the African safari segment. JW Marriott is part of Marriott International’s luxury portfolio, a portfolio that includes Four Points, Marriott Hotels, Autograph Collection Hotels and W Hotels. Sankara and Marriott Group signed a franchise agreement in 2018 that saw the Westland hotel operate under its premium brand, Autograph Collection.

In Nairobi, Marriott also operates two other hotels; the 172-room Four Points by Sheraton, Nairobi Airport, opened in October 2017, and the 96-room Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi, Hurlingham.” Fostering meaningful connections and nourishing the soul is at the heart of the JW Marriott brand, so, entering the luxury safari segment is a natural next step,” said Mr. Bruce Rohr, JW Mariott global brand leader.

In addition, the hospitality group announced in 2019 plans to open another facility under affiliate Protea Hotel brand as part of its partners’ Ksh 31 billion investments in Nairobi. Kenya’s hospitality landscape is set for major transformation with twenty-nine global hotel brands mulling new facilities.
