Kenya sets the longest African highline record

April 17th 2023

Jaan Roose, an Estonian daredevil and professional slackline athlete, has set a new Kenyan record for the longest highline in the country after successfully walking a 580-meter slackline suspended between two rock formations in Samburu County. The daring feat also marked Kenya’s first high-profile Highline event. During his earlier visit to the country in late 2022, Jaan demonstrated his skills in Nairobi, introducing the relatively uncommon sport of slacklining to the country.

Additionally, the breathtaking walk also broke the continental record, which the Estonian accomplished at Samburu County’s imposing Cat and Mouse rock formation. Jaan has previously competed in and won several competitions, including the 2016 Slackline World Cup Championship. The rigging took 16 hours and 30 minutes, thanks to the assistance of the local Samburu community and Climbing Life Kenya. The Samburu are a world-famous ethnic pastoralist group known for their elaborate ceremonies and traditional way of life.

The famed walker began his walk only after determining the best weather conditions and proceeded to battle the harsh sun and crosswinds of up to 30 kph for a breathtaking 58 minutes. The slackline was 151m high at Cat and 195m at Mouse, posing a unique challenge occasioned by a prolonged sag along the line. This forced the daredevil to walk at an angle. Jaan’s achievement highlights the possibilities of sports beyond traditional ball games, conventional track and indoor games.
